I am not sure where to start about my impressions of Dubai. When we first saw it, it looked like an enormous city of skyscrapers like New York.
However, it is clean, and so very modern. The buildings are elaborate with gold windows that curve, and buildings that are staggered, and different colors. It is almost like they are in competition to outdo each other. Even their mosques are elaborate.
I do not know how the women survive wearing black long gowns with black head coverings , some with their face covered except their eyes. It is 110 and I am melting!
We went to a spice market and a gold market. they are called souks. They reminded us of Turkey. narrow covered alleys with stores on either side selling the same stuff. the spices here had stuff we have never seen.
The gold market was crazy. It went on forever. The displays in the windows were spectacular.unfortunately, they gave us no time to shop.
The homes are more like estates one is more elaborate than the one next door. Their gates are beautiful. Inside are gorgeous sitting areas and pools.
We went to a dinner on the desert. We were driven in old land rovers over and around the sand dunes. They are redish brown but the sand is either hard like we know it to be, or super fine. If you step in the soft sand you will sink to your knees. How they get sand out of anything I do not know. It was in my hair, eyes everywhere and I was covered. However, there is peacefulness to the desert. you can see forever. How these people live in the desert and heat I do not understand. We saw Giselle and onyx .. let us not forget the camel.
In fact the favorite thing here is camel racing they can go up to 40 mph. we were told that they will sit down, or even stand still during a race. there is not any betting or drinking or air conditioning! Why Go?
